Cortisol is your body's main stress hormone, released by your adrenal glands on instructions from your brain whenever it decides you are under threat, real or imagined. It is not the enemy. A short, sharp rise in cortisol is exactly what gets you through a difficult meeting or a near miss on the motorway. The problem is not cortisol itself. It is cortisol that never gets the message to switch off, running high for weeks at a time and quietly wearing down your sleep, your mood and your long-term health.

Autumn puts a specific kind of pressure on that system. The days shorten, the routine tightens after a looser summer, and your body's natural cortisol rhythm, high in the morning to wake you, low at night to let you rest, has to reset itself against less daylight and a fuller diary at the same time. That combination is exactly when the genuinely evidence-based techniques below earn their keep.
