If you are pregnant and you have ever hesitated over an unwashed apple, worried that pesticide residue might reach your baby's developing brain, a large new study offers some reassurance. Researchers who tracked more than 3,000 mothers and their children [found no significant link](https://nyulangone.org/news/researchers-find-no-connection-between-pesticide-exposure-and-social-difficulties-common-autism) between prenatal exposure to organophosphate pesticides and the social traits associated with autism.

The study, published online August 24 in the journal JAMA Pediatrics, analyzed 3,339 mother-child pairs enrolled at 20 US medical centers through the National Institutes of Health's Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes program, a nationwide effort to understand how early exposures shape children's health. Its authors describe it as the largest and most diverse study of its kind to ask whether these insecticides contribute to autism-related traits.

To measure exposure, the researchers tested urine samples collected during each pregnancy for the breakdown products of the chemicals. Nearly every mother, 99 percent, had detectable levels of organophosphate pesticides. When the children were around 5 to 7 years old, their social traits were rated using the Social Responsiveness Scale, a 65-item questionnaire that captures behaviors such as avoiding eye contact, difficulty reading others' emotions, and needing to follow set routines, including in children who had never been formally diagnosed with autism. Across the group, the mothers' exposure levels showed no significant relationship to the children's scores.

The question had been open for years. Organophosphate pesticides interfere with the insect nervous system, and evidence built over time has tied them to neurodevelopmental problems in children, including IQ loss, cognitive difficulties and ADHD. Whether they also feed into autism-related traits was unclear, with earlier small studies landing on both sides.

"While we know that organophosphate pesticides can harm the developing brain, they were not a major driver of characteristics seen in autism at the relatively low exposure levels we observed," said lead author Haleigh Cavalier, MPH, PhD, a doctoral student at NYU Langone Health during the study and now a postdoctoral research scientist at Columbia University.

Cavalier pointed out that outside farms and workplaces, most Americans meet these chemicals mainly by eating fresh fruit and vegetables. One possible reason for the null result: the benefits of a produce-rich diet may partly offset any effect the residues have on a developing brain.

## The Researchers Stop Well Short of an All-Clear

The reassurance comes with limits the authors state plainly. The chemical breakdown products they measured are short-lived, fluctuate over time, and are shaped by each person's metabolism, so a single reading may not capture everything a mother was exposed to across a pregnancy. A null result at typical, relatively low exposure levels also does not extend to everyone.

Senior author Akhgar Ghassabian, MD, PhD, an associate professor in the pediatrics and population health departments at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, framed the finding as one piece of a much larger puzzle. "Our results demonstrate that there is still much more to be learned about autism," Ghassabian said. "Careful, long-term research can help clarify which environmental exposures matter most so that communities and policymakers can make more informed decisions."

The team plans to look next at other pesticides, at microplastics and other toxins, and at how genes tied to autism may interact with environmental exposures.
