This week the clocks went back, and London changed overnight. The afternoons now end before five, the commuters walk home under streetlights and the city settles into its winter rhythm. I have always loved this moment of the year. It asks something of us. When the light outside grows shorter, we have to bring more of our own.

On Monday the Hunter's Moon rises over the rooftops, the brightest full Moon of the autumn. By the weekend, cemeteries from Warsaw to Zagreb will glow with candles for All Saints, and a few days later the sky over London will fill with fireworks for Bonfire Night and the lamps of Diwali. Across the whole continent, people answer the dark in the same way. They light something, and they gather around it.
