On the remote South Atlantic island of St Helena, a tortoise older than photography itself still eats his breakfast every morning in the garden of the governor's residence. His name is Jonathan, and according to Guinness World Records, he is the oldest known living terrestrial animal on Earth. He was born around 1832. He is 194 years old in 2026.

To put that in perspective, William IV was king of England when Jonathan hatched. Queen Victoria had not yet taken the throne. Britain had not yet abolished slavery. Jonathan was already a grown adult, at least fifty years old, when he arrived on St Helena in 1882, brought over from the Seychelles as a gift. He was already old when Lewis Carroll published 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. He was already old when the women's suffrage movement began. Two world wars, the moon landing and the internet all happened during a single tortoise's lifetime, and he is still here, grazing on the same lawn.
