Fifteen people qualified as Ghana's first community-based doulas in Accra this month, after months of classroom teaching and supervised work on hospital wards. Thirteen are women and two are men. Some travelled twelve hours to get to the training.

They were taught a way of working that was developed nearly four decades ago in the United States, by an organisation that trains people to support women through pregnancy and birth in the neighbourhoods they already live in. It has been used in more than 100 American communities across 27 states. It has never been taught anywhere outside the country until now.
