Getting your hands into soil does something a to-do list cannot. Contact with soil bacteria has been linked to a genuine, measurable rise in serotonin, and the simple repetition of potting, watering and deadheading gives your mind something to focus on that is neither work nor a screen. Autumn adds its own advantage to all of this. The soil is still warm from summer, the weather is cool enough for real outdoor effort without the heat, and most of the plants worth growing right now ask far less of you than anything you would have planted in May.

You do not need a large garden or any real skill for the wellbeing benefit to hold. Studies on gardening and mental health consistently point to the same handful of mechanisms: gentle physical movement, exposure to daylight at a time of year when you are getting less of it, a task with a visible, achievable outcome, and the kind of focused attention that pulls your mind away from rumination without requiring meditation. None of that depends on the size of your plot. A single windowsill of pots gives you the same mechanism in miniature.
