Every tetanus and diphtheria booster given today has to stay cold from the moment it leaves the factory to the moment it goes into someone's arm. A new version of that same vaccine, tested in a small human trial in the UK, does not.

The vaccine, called SPVX02, is a freeze-dried reformulation of Tetadif, a tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine made by BB NCIPD in Bulgaria and prequalified by the World Health Organization. Stablepharma, the London company behind it, used its StablevaX technology to remake the shot so that it can sit at room temperature and survive being frozen. Phase 1 results, peer reviewed and published in eClinicalMedicine, are the first human data on whether that reformulation works.
