An injectable material developed at Duke University helped stroke-damaged brains in mice grow new blood vessels, supported nerve regrowth and improved the animals' movement, according to a study published in the journal Cell Biomaterials. The work aims at a problem that today's stroke care cannot solve: once brain tissue has died, restoring blood flow does not bring it back.

When an ischemic stroke strikes, a clot blocks blood flow to part of the brain. Emergency care can dissolve that clot or physically remove it, restoring circulation and saving tissue that is still viable. But a severe stroke can destroy a substantial amount of tissue before that happens, sometimes leaving a cavity where healthy brain once was. The Duke researchers set out to change what happens in that empty space.
