Two children who received experimental gene-editing therapies in China died in 2025, and in both cases their deaths were not made public until about a year or more later. The cases drew renewed attention on 11 September 2026, after Eric Topol, a cardiologist and genomics researcher at Scripps Research, wrote about them [in a post on X](https://x.com/EricTopol/status/2098417744299561231). The accounts have been reported across major science press, including Science, STAT News, Nature, Bloomberg and CNN.

## The Deaths Came a Year or More Before They Were Disclosed

The first child was a six-year-old girl with Snijders Blok-Campeau syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. She received an experimental base-editing therapy delivered by spinal injection and died in March 2025, according to an exclusive report in Science and coverage by CRISPR Medicine News. Her death was not disclosed until July 2026, about 16 months later. She had developed thrombotic microangiopathy, a recognised complication of the adeno-associated viral vector, or AAV, used to deliver the treatment.
