The first thing awake is rarely you. It is the list. Before your eyes open the meeting is already in the room, the email you did not send, the figure that came in light, the conversation you would run differently if you could run it again. You have not had coffee. You have not stood up. The day has started without your permission.

You have tried things. There was the app with the breathing exercises, the supplement, the watch that scores your sleep and then leaves you anxious about the score. Calm has become one more thing to be good at, and most mornings you are losing at it before you reach the kitchen.

Something works on this, and you have almost certainly been sleeping through it.
